Ok. I think I'm having the same problem. I downloaded Oracle EE 8.1.6 R2 and happily untarred the tarball only to find that the runInstaller script core dumped! It did initially pop up it's splash screen but got no further.

Mark, I did check out your site (thanks for doing this, I've bookmarked it) but I didn't find what I was looking for. Can you (or someone) help?
