Home -> Community -> Usenet -> c.d.o.server -> Re: Installing NT for Oracle8i
Hi,
I agree with Gabriel that windows 2000 would be a much better option then NT4. I also install Windows2000 Advanced Server with Oracle 8i every day, and I haven't had a problem yet for two months. It is true that Oracle only certifies Oracle 8.1.6 on Windows 2000, however I installed several systems with 8.1.5 and they work like a charm. So I wouldn't worry about that either. As for the installation procedure: even my little sister can install windows 2000, and she only has experience with her playstation, haha ;-) For you as an experienced unix-man it should be no sweat. But I agree with Jerry: If you hesitate in installing windows NT or 2000 then you could go for linux, since you have Unix knowledge anyhow.. If you decide to use linux I should warn you that the OAS4 on linux takes a lot work to get stable. We installed an OAS4 on Red Hat 6.2 on a dual PIII-550 with 512MB ram, but the OAS alone already launches about 500 processes, wich creates the need to tune your linux and OAS installation a bit. Also the memory requirements for both systems would be 256MB minimum!! Also a 500Mhz processor wouldn't be luxury.
Good luck,
