Searching the newsgroups provided 2 possible solutions that had worked for other people.

  1. Setting LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/lib:/usr/lib:$ORACLE_HOME/lib 2) Adding $ORACLE_HOME/lib to /etc/lb.so.conf and running ldconfig Both didn't work for me. I had to assume that the library was smoked, so I deinstalled/reinstalled. It wasn't until I deleted the oraInventory and contents of ORACLE_HOME that the reinstall worked successfully.

I re-installed using Typical - Custom and selecting all the products. At the end of the install, I had been clicking EXIT, but clicking NEXT fixed the rwproblem  with sqlplus and lsnrctl.

Log files were clean, SQLPlus and everything else worked. I then applied the 2 patches for 8.1.5 and everything is still working. There is much rejoicing...
