The only quantifiable gauge that makes sense to me is probably not available yet -- with x amount of years experience and certification at level y would you make significantly more money than one without that certification.

It is really all about money even for those taking the exams.

Some reasons that I would want to get certified.

(1) I suspect that my competition is probably getting certified right now to try to demonstrate that they are better than I am. (2) If I go through a lengthy certification process it will at least demonstrate that I have discipline and that I am willing to play the game. (3) If I keep my certification up-to-date with the latest Oracle technology that would be a sign that I can learn new tricks and overcome bad habits.
