It probably has to do with your tnsnames.ora and listener.ora files. In earlier databases you used a SID as one of your parameters and Oracle appended a .world (or whatever) to it. In 8.1 when you check the box for 8.1 you need to use a service name which is usually your SID.world insetad of just your SID.
