Hi,
I have a strange feeling this is being caused by the compatible parameter in init<sid>.ora.
The third party software probably doesn't check v$version. Could you check this? As the value of compatible also gets written in the controlfile an 'upgrade' is easy, but a 'downgrade' will probably cause problems.
