I am just getting started trying to learn about Oracle, so I installed Oracle8i on my Nt Workstation machine.

The install went fine and then setup asked me if I wanted to create a database, I said yes, chose Custom and then just decided to choose the smallest available database. After about 30 minutes my database ( so the server said ) had been created.

When I tried to go into the Data Manager, a box popped up that asked for my username password, service name and connection role(?).

I entered the username and password as I had set for the internal username, password when I was creating my database. For the service name, I entered the SID I used when creating the database.

For some reason though, I can not get Oracle to recognize my service name.

I went into the Net8 setup and tried to create a new service name and chose one at a time each connection protocol type, but I could not create a service because it could not understand my service name.

I have ordered a book on 'Oracle for the Beginner" but I wish I could just see the structure of my database.

What is this service name and how can I get into my database?

Larry
