My condolences,

I'm doing the same thing, on the same platform/OS. I hope you have a service contract with Oracle. You'll be needing their help. I doubt that any Oracle customers were able to install and run this release "as-is".

  1. bug590974: only members of the "MIPS" group may "connect internal". (Pretty hard to build a database if you can't connect). It's hardcoded; you can get a patch (or recode config.c yourself, and re-make it, if you're brave. If you use the installer to relink everything, you won't have to look at all the scary error messages from the linkage-editor; I think the makefile might be flawed)
  2. many of the utilities packaged with 8.0.3.0 are alpha versions
  3. there is a patchset available to upgrade to 8.0.3.2.0 available by ftp from Oracle. --you will also need the patch for bug629767 when u upgrade to 8.0.3.2
  4. the motif version of orainst coredumps any time I try to run it. Use the character-mode interface instead
  5. the Net8 Assistant, netcw, wasn't provided on the distribution CD.

Aside from that, it's a breeze, just follow the steps in the manual:)

--define ORACLE_BASE, and run orainst
--run root.sh
--make sure you define LD_LIBRARY_PATH to include /usr/lib and
ORACLE_HOME/lib (I put these in /etc/profile, along with ORACLE_SID ... there may be a better way)
--make sure your path includes ORACLE_HOME/bin (oh, instead of /var/opt/oracle/oratab as specified in the manual, look for /etc/oratab)
--configure your tnsnames.ora and listener.ora files (in ORACLE_HOME/network/admin)

I hope some of this info helps. Just call me "disgruntled".
