Thanks for all the suggestions and yes, I managed to sort out the problem. Michael had the right idea and my second option was to do the log switch as suggested by Roy.

It seems the RECOVER DATABASE UNTIL CANCEL generates names for archive log files irrespective of whether they actually exist or not. So yes, I should have just issued the RECOVER DATABASE without the UNTIL CANCEL option. I assumed the AUTO would figure out that an online vs. an archived redo log should be applied, but I guess it doesn't.
