We had a long and unsatisfactory history putting these anywhere else other than under /etc exclusively on HPUX 10.20 server.

TNS_ADMIN with variable placement of the *.ora files works nicely on the clients, but we had problems identifying which .profile or .cshrc file to put it in in the server. Maybe TNS_ADMIN should be put in the dbstart script (?).
