I agree that knowledge of another animal hurts more than it helps. I went from informix DBA to Oracle DBA 2 years ago. Although informix and Oracle are considered similar in architecture, crossing the boundary brings lots of confusions. It's best to completely forget your previous knowledge at the begining, then, maybe at later time when you are more comfortable with the new one, compare the knowledge back, you may find yourself suddenly know more on both sides.

So I'd say it hurts first but in the long run, it helps.

But after 2 years, I still think Informix is a better engine. Sorry, can't help it.
