The idea that people see how others do things, and so decide to do them too. So someone wants to become an Internet Marketing Expert, and see all the other Internet Marketing Experts spamming, they think that is the Road To $ucce$$. So this behavior needs to be nipped in the bud. It's hard to evaluate how successful any nipping can be, but I think the onus would be on those who advocate doing nothing to prove that doing nothing is better. Good luck with that. There are certainly examples of usenet groups where the spammers have won, the unfortunately named misc.jobs.misc is the one that sold me on the value of at least trying.
