Here's a white paper that may help you with some basic differences: http://www.oracle.com/us/products/database/self-managing-database-twp-066400.pdf Here's an example of ADDM: http://oracledoug.com/serendipity/index.php?/archives/1504-I-Love-ADDM.html Of course, the performance tuning manual has all the basics, chapter 5 in the 11.2 guide.

See the performance tuning manual, it gets you started looking at each of those. Just type in each term in the navigation search screen and follow the links!

Naturally the manual is a bit generic and can be completely misleading (as can the advisors and any auto-tuning tools), so searching google comes up with case studies to walk you through what people have seen.

There're also books about performance tuning, though I haven't looked at the recent basic books. Others have made recommendations you can find.
