Yes, apologies, sardonic tone possibly lost on newsgroup.
sqlplusw IS the crappy obsolescent one used by people who don't know any better. AFAIK its "File, Open" menu option is its one useful feature, and even then it's easy enough to drag & drop files into a sqlplus.exe session from an explorer window. It used to have online help too but I think that disappeared a long time ago.
What I generally do is use its tombstone icon for my sqlplus.exe

though in XE, sqlplus.exe finally comes with a nice "SQL>" icon (and
no crappy pseudo-GUI version).
