Could well be a different NLS_TERRITORY or NLS_DATE_FORMAT setting on
client and server. One side conforms to the ANSI definition and the
other side conforms to the ISO definition. When not set, the settings
on Windoze depend on the territory settings in the control panel.
Also connecting from a higher version client to a lower version
database isn't exactly downwards compatibility and may result in
unknown problems, especially as 8.1.7.3 is desupported.
