Also, I am not sure why the OP needs to do this, as the whole point of a tnsnames.ora is to provide a connection and attributes for that connection based on the name? Various Oracle client utilities use the 'name' provided to refer back to information supplied by the tnsname entry. Mucking about with custom connection strings behind their back is a sure way to introduce interesting behavior.
