Now that's embarrassing. I did in fact read said manual. I did insert the parameters (it's /etc/system btw, not /etc/shell). However, I forgot to reboot the machine afterwards. Did so now, and everything looks fine.
Erm... guess I'll just quietly go hide in a corner.
