If you or they have a support contract check out system lifecycle on metalink and you'll find that both of the versions you refer to are desupported. Standard builds are one thing but only supporting versions that are more than 3 years old is plain daft. or to pit it another way by not certifying the 8i client the department is saying to the business if we encounter any bugs in this setup we will be accountable for them without reference to the supplier since they no longer support it. Presumably they don't patch the desktop operating system either.
