I'd like to agree with you but I can not.

Oracle Corp. itself has yet to certify 9i for its own apps. There is not a single production copy of 9i in most organizations. Lots of it in development and testing but it is not yet ready for prime-time.

And to darken your analogy ... Alchemy will teach you nothing of value as a chemist. But 8i will teach you 90% or more of what you need to know to move to 9i.

The truth be told, the vast majority of 8i apps still don't do anything that couldn't be done in 7.3.4.
