Ehm, talking to myself ... the problem seems to be related on installation directory name of Oracle products on client: reinstalling broken client on a directory name less than 8 chars (ora804 rather than ora-8.0.4) seems to resolve problem whereas reinstalling working client on a directory name longer than 8 chars (ora-8.0.4 rather than ora804) broken it.
