I've had success in installing O8I on RH 6.
The most important thing ...is READ THE INSTRUCTIONS .. they are under index.html in the Oracle 8 distrubition. Some parts of the installation has to be made 'by hand'. (Creating some new symbols, adding a few things to PATH etc)
The second most important thing is to have a (for O8I) working JRE installed on your machine. I think the manual says JRE 1.6, but I did it with JRE 1.7, and it worked smooth... and .. don't forget the path to the JRE too ........
