It doesn't.

There is only one good reason to do cold backups: it introduces a shutdown and startup. This is a very good idea, since the shutdown/startup will alert you to any problems with the database. These may not show up until a restart of the database.

If you have a window of downtime, you might as well get a cold backup in if you can; otherwise just start it up again straight away and continue with hot backups.
