Slow Oracle connection

Hello,

We have several Oracle/UNIX servers (IBM, HP). On some of them it takes a LONG time to get into something like SQLPLUS, even if the application is actually ran from the server. Are there some initialization/environment variables that can be set to speed up the connection? What are the things to watch out for when tuning it?
