There isn't any reason that I can think of not to do it this way. One easy way to accomplish it would be to use a bang (!) system call to invoke a program which will send you the message you need (if Unix, then sendmail would work).
Using this method is fast and easy; it gets the job done. A second method would be to use a table driven process which has an agent that will turn the insert event into a mail message. I have used this form to good advantage more than once and like the range of things that I can cause to happen based on various events.
