What you see as /dev/sda in your new VM is the new _virtual_ disk (a file, most likely named <vm_name>.vdi in the default path for virtual storage:
the path you see/set when you go to Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager->File->Preferences->General->Default Machine Folder). It's not the /dev/sdX you see from your host!

If you want to use different partitions on your host machine for virtual disks on your guest machine,
just set the desired path when creating new virtual disks.

Check the following - really nice - step-by-step guide by Kamran Agayev:

He describes everything (including the setup of the VMs).
