upgrade to 11r2

I'm on V10 Oracle .on Redhat Linux and slightly perplexed I have installed the 11 software and a test database via the installer but after setting the path and explicity calling the right sqlplus I get cannot mount db in exclusive mode.
I've done this sort of upgrade so many times successfully I really cant see what I have done wrong.
The only oddity I noticed is I didn't get asked to run root.sh. I have found a root.sh and run it in case this was the problem Any Ideas? Hoping for a quick answer as only have a brief time window to do the upgrade! (what A surprise!)
