Richard,
Which OS?
Look for the oraInst.loc file. This points to the Oracle Inventory location. On Aix, it's in the /etc directory.
Look in the inventory directory at the ContentsXML file. It's an Xml file containing the Oracle Homes.
Good luck. If you change anything, don't ask me to help you. It's kinda convoluted.

Subject: Oracle's Installer
Anyone have any idea where that darned installer keeps it's list of Oracle_Homes? I've got a system here that is so fouled up (thank you SAP) that I can't install anything anymore.
