I totally agree with August. To attempt a 24x7 operation and be too cheap to have a staging server is totally idiotic. A staging server is essential for any critical system, 24x7 or not. I think you've fallen into the "Dilbert Zone". If next you tell me that you're the only DBA and server administrator and network guy, then you should flee. Or at least keep your resume fresh. And even so-called 24x7 sites usually slip in some sort of maintenance window. With stuff like RAC, Oracle is getting there with being able to add patches without interruption, but not quite yet.
