Another point is that not all recoveries are on the catastrophic scale. There are other problems that can occur. An example would be the loss of a single data file. With archivelogmode, Oracle has other alternatives for recovery, and often Oracle makes the recovery simple. Without archivelogmode, usually the only alternative is to reload the last cold backup.
