I've recenty been testing this (from IO perspective).

Funny thing is, it doesn't matter what value I use, as long as it is above 1.

WIth 2 and 128 i get the same Full tablescan performance. I am testing on Linux with RAW partitions, with 8gb full table scan, with single drive units.

I think 128 is the maximum value, right ?

I think that my perfromance observations are due to read ahead performed by the SAN hosting that single drive.
