RE: flashback query vs. log miner

I'm pretty sure that 5 days is a hard limit, unless you're into hacking the database.....;-)

As I recall a certain dinner in Dallas, Kirti described how he successfully did so, extending the 5 day limit to, um, 10 days, perhaps....? ;-)

But, I don't think that would be a recommended approach for a production database....;-)

Thanks Kirti,

That was a very concise description and along the lines of what I was = =3D
telling a junior dba I am training. =3D20

However, is it a hard limit for FBQ - 5 days - or is it solely based on =3D
undo tablespace size and undo tablespace retention parameter? =3D20

Also, is there any downside with allocating a great deal of space to the =3D
undo tablespace in a database other than static allocation?

Paula,
One must use LogMiner if one needs to access data that is more than 5 = =3D
days old (instance
uptime wise). FBQ does not help you. Of course, this changes with Oracle =3D
10g ( and what
doesn't? ;).=3D20

Also, with 9i rel 2 SQL enhancement (the AS OF clause) it is very easy =3D
to use FBQ to
access past data (if it is still available in the undo segments). =3D Accessing the same
information via LogMiner is a bit more involved process. With proper =3D privileges, you can
let your developers use FBQ, but I doubt if DBAs will allow Developers = =3D
to play with
LogMiner. =3D20

So, I would not use one versus the other all the time, but may be =3D required to use both,
depending on the requirement.=3D20

Regards,
- Kirti
