Intel has some docs related to this up on their website.

back in the days of the PIII Xeons, the 2 MB cache 900 MHz was 15% faster.

Today, they compare the 4 MB L3 cache (not L2, I believe) as being 30% faster than the 1 MB L3 cache model.

if you're processing nested loops code (such as Connor's achieve a stated buffer cache hit ratio loop) the larger cache would probably win.
