Ron,

  Something I forgot and which Dennis' remark about format reminded me of :
You'll probably have to run $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/admin/catexp7.sql againts your 8.1.7 database before you can use the Oracle7 exp against it (and run catexp again once you're done). File formats should be OK if your .dmp is generated by the same version for exp and imp, but the internal tables used by the utility have changed.
