Bob,
We've had a symtoms like that (Oracle 7.3 and windows NT). In our case it was related to the size of the Oracle executable on windows - it grows dynamically based on the number of connections (and how much work the connections are doing?) but it normally can't grow larger than 2Gb because of limits in windows. The db buffers, the pools, and the the memory for each connected user (4mb? per session) adds up pretty quickly. We had db block buffers of about 700Mb and a couple of hundred sessions. The solution that worked for us (it's in the docs and in metalink) was to add a switch to windows boot.ini file which will allow Oracle to grow up to 3Gb. Chaim

Gurus,

Oracle Version: 8.0.4 (I know we are way behind) OS: Windows NT (Service Pack 6)
Physical Memory: 1.5 GB
Virtual Memory: 1.5 GB

Once in every week, we get "TNS-12500 TNS:listener failed to start a dedicated server process". When I check listener process, it was running. When I check number of sessions, it was always below number processes (setup by init.ora file). Whenever we get this error message, one out of fifteen sessions get successful connection. When we check system resources, we had enough free memory in the system. If we try to stop listener process and restart again, it works for a while (may be 30 Min.). We couldn't find any error messages both in alert log file as well as OS event log.

Only solution, we had right now is to reboot the NT server in the middle of production time. Users are getting frustrated whenever we reboot the server.

I think upgrading database to 8i or 9i would help our problem. But, we are not in a position to do so.

I think there might be memory leakage which we could not see from the OS Task Manager.

Did any one come across similar kind of problem. I would appreciate if you could share your experience with me.

Thanks,
Bob
