AIX, kprocs, and open Oracle datafiles

According to our SA, these oracle kproc processes in AIX are there to serve i-o for  each open datafile.   Is that true?   If so, would that imply that it would be better to have fewer, larger datafiles in the database to avoid a surfeit of kproc processes????
