Private vs. Public Rollback Segments

Can someone explain the benefit of using a private rollback segment? The only advantage I can see is having more control over what rollback segments actually come on line when the instance is started. The drawback is you have to use the rollback_segments parameter in the parameter file which we know a lot of newbies miss. It seems like the easiest way to go is just use public segments, even in non-parallel server situations and then you don't have to worry about the rollback_segments parameter.
