Hello All

Hitesh Patel, posted to the list the following:

A colleague of mine is trying to create a second database on a Novell
server and is having problems when he issues the STARTUP NOMOUNT
command. Oracle keeps displaying the message that An Instance has
already been started up even though he has specified a new INIT.ORA
file with a new database name.

The other problem he has is that according to the manuals he needs to
specify the Instance in a file called CONFIG.ORA on the Novell server.
However even for his existing database there is no Instance specified
and in SQLDBA when he types in SHOW INSTANCE it displays local ?? He
wants to know where he specifies the instance and how!!

One must keep in mind that Novell networks' multiple Orcale instances are NOT supported if the Network is running on IPX/SPX protocol. This is clearly stated in Oracle's Server User's Guide for Netware. This is true in Oracle v.7.1 also. If yoy have TCP/IP, then multiple Oracles can be run, but from v.7.1 and up.

Hope this helps,
