It always prompt error byte.

Example:

SQL> shutdown immediate;^[[C^[[D^[[D^[[A

Not sure whether I understood your question.
Are you talking about the 'backspace' key (to go back and edit )?
It depends on your environment,shell.
Try

stty erase \^H

and invoke sqlplus.
If you are talking about fetching the command line history, it is not available by default (in unix). Several alternatives are available, if you can google.
