i just want to know what N-tier Application mean

i read that in many books but i don't know what they mean when they say "N-tier Application"

N is a number; typically 2 or 3.
BROWSER<==>APPLICATION_SERVER<==>DATABASE_SERVER is a 3 tier application environment.
A 2 tier application environment is classic CLIENT/SERVER.

In 3 tier the client is a "dumb" browser.
In 2 tier the client must be smart enough to talk directly to DB server; typically via softwaer installed on a PC.
In the Oracle arena, Forms 6 was client/server while 10iAS is web based 3-tier architecture.
