There is a good article in the current Oracle magazine about timelines in Oracle 30th anniversary. Page 24. You can view it at http://www.oracle.com/oramag/index.html

People here continually show that they are using 8i, 8 and even 7. I have even seen someone give advice by pointing them to a site (most likely their own) that referenced an init.ora setting that might have a side-effect in Oracle 5 (gasp!).
Oracle 5 came out in 1985
Oracle 7:  1992
Oracle 8:  1997
Oracle 8i: 1999

As we all know, in technology, a generation is around 3 years, unlike a human generation of 20, so you can see that Oracle 8i is almost 3 generations old.
