hi all,

i just downloaded the oracle 10g developers edition to test some things out.

my hardware is:
- 40GB hard disk
- 1GB Ram
- 1800Mhz
- WindowsXP.
(at normal operation, without oracle, the memory usage of my pc is around 500Mb, so i have 500Mb left over).

however,
- full installation took 3hrs. is this normal?
- since i installed it (and created one database in it), my pc works terribly slow (complete startup of the system takes 20min, while before it was not more then 2minutes). is this normal with the hardware above?

will it be better with the oracle express version?
i just have to install two tables in oracle 10g to act as simulator, for data retrieving to SQL server 2005. connection to oracle should be via odbc... will this also be possible with oracle 10g express edition?

I though the bare minimum for 10g was 1Gb, leaving no memory left for anything else really. And with all the spyware that windows loads, I would imagine you're well below 1Gb when you finally get to run Oracle.

Except HDD I have about the same parameters for my home PC and I wouldn't say that all is terribly slow. Of course I'm not playing games a la DOOM while Oracle is up Smile
Change the Oracle service startup to manual, and start it up only when needed.

after all it took me 2hrs to uninstall it.
after de-installation my pc runs fine again.

now i installed the 10g express edition, and after a few hours working with that installation, it seems to run well on my pc's.

in production it's of course the standard edition. i hope when i develop my application with the 10g Express Edition, i will get no surprises when my application goes to production... ???
(application is in fact an SSIS of Sql Server 2005 with ODBC connection to two oracle tables)

Theoretically all should be OK, especially if you are using only basic features.
On the other hand it is always advisable to have development and especially test environments as close as possible to production, to avoid nasty surprises.
You can check http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/oracle10g/pdf/twp_general_10gdb_product_family.pdf
to compare features and differences of various DB editions.
