HYDERABAD: It is now official. The prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) will come up at Kandi in Medak district, and not in the temple town of Basar, in Adilabad.

Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy told presspersons on Sunday that the Government had accepted the recommendation of the three-member high-power committee that had gone into the issue of the IIT site, favouring Medak.

He said the committee had analysed the strengths and weaknesses of the two sites and submitted its observations. It also raised some pertinent issues, which needed to be addressed. The committee comprising R. Natarajan, former Chairman, All-India Council of Technical Education, N. Balakrishnan, Associate Director, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and Rajiv Sangal, Director, International Institute of Information Technology, presented its 27-page report to the Government.

"From a predominantly academic perspective and keeping in mind the probability of fulfilment of the expectations for an IIT in Andhra Pradesh, the analyses point to the Kandi site in Medak district as the more appropriate and suitable location," the committee in its final recommendation said.

Dr. Reddy said in view of the IIT coming up in Medak, three state-of-the-art International Institutes of Information Technology (IIIT) would come up at Basar, Idupulapaya (Kadapa) and Nuzvid (Krishna).
