Oracle licensing for websites [message #229933]

Hi all,
I've looked at the Oracle's website regarding to the licensing cost but I did not really extract good info about licensing for website usage.
If I would like to run Oracle Database 10g for my website, what type of license do I need? From the technical view, only one license should be required since that is the main user who is bridge user from the website to the database. I am a little confused here. Does it matter at all if you have 1000 visitors or 100000 visitors? They are not accessing the database directly anyway.

Contact your local Oracle Salesperson for this information. To my knowledge, you are not charged based on the number of users, but based on your processor.

You can either license by:

Named User Plus
Processor

Well it looks like Oracle Database Server One with 5 named user plus should be enough and is also the minimum requirement to run a website that uses Oracle database. Of course for a small scale web application, otherwise I may need to buy license for more CPUs.

I might be mistaken but for a small website, wouldn't Oracle XE be suitable?

Yes but Oracle XE has some limitations like 4GB database space. I am actually planning to store a lot of data....and I also don't want have trouble when upgrading from Oracle XE to Oracle Standard One in the future.

Somebody also told me that this should be based on CPU instead of per user basis. There is almost $4000 difference..

What kind of trouble do you expect during upgrade process?

Why wouldn't you start with (free) XE, earn some money on your website and spend it (some day in the future) for upgrading your database?

Well I was planning to store media on the database but this also seems affect the performance. I just know from the experience that upgrading databases is always pain. Paying $800 for license is no problem but paying $5000 is a problem for me.
