using expired products license problem [message #216999]

Our company needs to buy an specific application developed years ago, using Oracle 8i. The product has been working perfectly for others during these years, but Oracle 8i is desupported now.
The cost of software upgrade (to support Oracle 10g) is not acceptable for us. Does anybody have any idea about a legal solution for this problem?

Did you consider Oracle 10g Express Edition (XE)? I don't know anything about the application you are about to use, XE has its limitations but - you might take a look.

Before thinking about software upgrade, we are looking for some kind of legal license for the old version (8i).

I would expect that the licence cost for Oracle 8i would be the same as for Oracle 10g.

Just in addition to my previous post (and David's one too): Oracle XE is free - you won't have to pay anything for it.

I don't get that. First you say you cannot afford the upgrade of the product to support Oracle 10g, now you say that if the Oracle license is free, your product can run on 10g.

Since I post my question here, there are good news, let me explain a little more:
There is a huge amount of C source code, using OCI (oracle call interface) API. If used parts of OCI are the same in Oracle 8i and Oracle 10g, then the only overhead is probably re-compiling sources (this overhead is acceptable). Application provider is trying to avoid upgrading source codes, but they can try to re-compile and do some tests.
After seeing the replies, I have asked the provider to try re-compiling sources using oracle XE.

If it is not a problem, would you, please, return after software provider recompiles the code? I'd like to know results of their effort.
