Please help me understand the different states of the Oracle Database upon Startup in Oracle 10g.

I understand that after a clean shutdown , a database can be started up in nomount, mount, restrict or open.

Obviously there must be different amounts of restrictions for each of these states. I believe that the database cannot be open if the DBA plans to turn archiving on or to move some files around.

I am confused as to which functions are normally completed while the database is in nomount versus mount versus restricted. Please clear this up for me. Thank you.
