HI,

I have the following situation:

We have Veritas cluster setup , and there are 2 solaris servers on which VCS is set up. On this set up we have about 8 databases all of which are 9.2.0.6 version.

Now we have one stand alone solaris server, and it has a 9.2.0.7 database. This database is for a third party application -Clear Case & Clear Quest.

Now it is required to move the single instance database to clustered environment.

Since in the clustered environment we have 9.2.0.6 version, is it AT ALL POSSIBLE to move this database, which is 9.2.0.7 to that enviroment?

I guess not, and in that case, what are the options? - since this is a packaged application , so should be contact the vendor and ask them whether we can downgrade the database to 9.2.0.6? - is that a valid option? Are there other options? (upgrading the existing 9.2.0.6 database to make all of them 9.2.0.7 is not allowed.)

Again thanks a lot for the kind help..

You can setup a new ORACLE_HOME for 9.2.0.7.
Now you have two ORACLE_HOMEs. One for 9.2.0.6 AND other for 9.2.0.7.
By the way, 9.2.0.7 and 9.2.0.6 are not miles away (in terms of versions). There might be a few bug fixes/patch. If your application can support it, you can have all in one version.

>>Now it is required to move the single instance database to clustered environment.
What do you mean by this?
You converting single instance to RAC
or
You want to have a single instance database among the RAC databases?

What I mean is that: our 9.2.0.7 database is now in a single instance environment. It is on a solaris server, which is not a part in the VCS set up. Now it is a requirement, that this 9.2.0.7 database needs to be in a clustered set up. - We have this clustered set up in another 2 db servers..but the problem is that the oracle home there is 9.2.0.6.

So what you have suggested is that , in those 2 servers, we need to create another oracle home for 9.2.0.7 , if I understood correctly?

Regarding the other seggestion to upgrade to 9.2.0.7, that is not possible as it requires several approvals and testing etc.

so i should go for having 2 homes , one for 9.2.0.6 and other for 9.2.0.7 right? sounds complicated --is there a document or a link that can show me implementation level details?

Again thanks a ton!!

Complicated~!. how?
You are just having two ORACLE_HOME'S.
That is it. It is a widely used practise ( from Oracle 7 days).

You cannot upgrade.
You cannot downgrade.
You cannot afford to host the database in another system.

Whatelse is your option?
Just setup a new ORACLE_HOME.
Install oracle on this home.
Create database in this home.
Now you can use the SAME listener entries for both ORACLE_HOMES
or
use seperate entries/seperate ports.
>>is there a document or a link that can show me implementation level details
It is documented all over metalink.
Actually there is nothing new here. It looks complicated. But nothing new. All you do is create a new ORACLE_HOME.
A quick search got me here

Update:
The said URL will take you to a metalink note (Note: 1023317.6 < HOW DO YOU CREATE two SEPARATE oracle_homeS ON A SINGLE MACHINE?)
Just look into that note.
Ignore all the rest (NabeelKhan is talking about a different scenario.)
As said, if look into the NOTE, it is nothing complicated at all.
