We have a database link from one of our databases going to a 3rd party vendors DB over a VPN. While this link works fine for small queries, the connection is dropped (or times out) for big sql queries.

However, the network admin believes this is not a VPN issue (and inclined to agree with this) and the 3rd party outsourcer is unwilling to admit responsibility/liability at their end (surprise suprise!).

Therefore, please can someone suggest how I might go about proving where the fault actually resides?

We had a similar problem and fixed it specifing a parameter in the sqlnet.ora file.
