I've installed 10g and patched it to the latest patchset. I haven't created a database because I need to copy a database from an older sun machine to my new sun machine and I need to know what steps I need to take.
Do I need to create a databse first or is there any way of copying it over along with all teh settings?
As I'm going from 8.1.7 to 10g is there an upgrade path I need to take?

Hi,

Consider taking this one step at a time - do the upgrade first, and then the migration, or vice versa.

The upgrade is documented in the Upgrade Guide.

For the migration, use RMAN to backup the old database and restore it to the new server. If you don't want to use RMAN, you may also consider using an OS backup/restore, or even an Oracle export/import.

Best regards.

As I've loaded 10g without creating a database or an instance will I be able to copy the whole database over without having to create an instance etc ?

Will it bring over all the roles/privledges etc?
