I'm currently doing a database course and have been using old exam papers as a revision guide.

One of the questions is :

Define the property of closure and give an example of it using Oracle/SQL

I've searched my notes but I can't find any reference to closure, even searching all the tutors lecture notes for the word closure shows only two occurences which are both in the old exam papers.

I've spent hours searching the internet for information on Closure but the results completely confuse me. This is a fairly basic course, most of the other questions in this section are just on SELECT queries Union Interect Minus etc.

Could someone explain in simple terms what closure would mean in this context.

Thanks

I don't know what they mean either. Perhaps they are referring to a closed database. The following is an excerpt from the Oracle9i Backup and Recovery Concepts Glossary.

closed database
A database that is not available to users for queries and updates. When the database is closed you can start the instance and optionally mount the database.

I think I know what they are referring to now. If you search for "relational closure property" in the following two documents, I think you will find what you need.

Thanks Barbara,

I'll have a read and see if they make any sense to me.
