I would first look into the alert logs.

Just read the alert.log file, it gives you what Oracle does at the datetime of the beginning and end of each step.

Why is Oracle being shutdown frequently?

If you don't shutdown Oracle, then it won't be slow starting up again.

we need to shutdown oracle 3 times a day as this instance is used as a way of "replication" we mount and unmount the disks of this instance on different servers and at times oracle takes a longer time to come up the alert logs dont show errors so i was wondering if there are any kinds of tracing we can use in oracle for the stop and start
thank you
Maria

thank i read your posting - i know that after oracle is recycled once the next time is much faster coming up etc - however in this case i just need some tracing to see what oracle does when shutdown down and up to help diagnostic a oracle veritas issue
thanks
Maria

It sounds to me you are doing as below

1) shutdown Immediate
2) replacing whole disk volumes (which contain some Oracle DB)
3) STARTUP -- but the DB that is brought online is a totally different instance (whole new SCN range)

The only thing constant is the ORACLE_HOME tree

Best Wishes!

actually something similar to that - we have 2 different servers each has its own oracle instance then a new set of disks which are mounted on either or server these unique set of disks have a unique oracle instance and this is the one that i want the tracing on it
thanks

So you didn't read my post as it does not mention what you say. It was:
